True Humility
Devotional —True Humility
When I think about being humble it’s often the result of looking back at something that I have been involved in or the way I reacted to something.
The actual definition of Humility - is a modest or low view of one's own importance; humbleness.
Makes me thing of surrender.
To be brought low to the ground. To sacrifice, to yield to the other person for their benefit.
Doesn’t take much to see this in John 13.
Jesus places Himself on the floor, with a basin, to wash the very feet of the men who have done life along side of Him everyday for years.
His community.
His people. Specifically picked.
To teach. To lead.
To love. To spread His word.
For generations. For the eternal.
His disciples.
He chooses the unexpected surrender, the confused positioning, and starts the process of sacrificing His life to save the world and the entirety of creation.
Huge moment.
Huge sacrifice.
Huge reward.
"After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, “Do you understand what I was doing? You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am. And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you. I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message. Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them.” John 13:12-17
*There’s nothing that love won’t do. Jesus is the the purest example of love. Surrendered to dirty feet. And then to death on the cross.
At the very least we should be able to surrender to serve and love others daily. Even if it’s an inconvenience or a sacrifice we can have a posture of surrender and humility with a heart for others just like Jesus.
